An early pilot human study reported increased skin pigmentation (tanning) after low subcutaneous doses; later research used it as a tool to study melanogenesis (pigment production) and melanocortin-receptor (MC1R and MC4R) biology.
Non-selective melanocortin-receptor agonism - chiefly MC1R (linked to pigmentation) and MC4R (linked to appetite and sexual-function pathways in research models).
Melanotan 2 is not approved in any jurisdiction, and regulators in several countries have warned the public against unapproved “melanotan” products.
